UAE’s first drone cybersecurity guidelines explained
Here’s how the country plans to secure its skies from cyber threats
ABU DHABI: In a major step towards securing national airspace and critical infrastructure, the UAE Cybersecurity Council (CSC) has launched the country's first comprehensive Drone Cybersecurity Guidelines.
Developed in partnership with Reach Digital and Shieldworkz, this initiative is designed to protect unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) from growing cyber threats while advancing the UAE’s technological edge.
As drones become increasingly common in fields such as agriculture, environmental research, and logistics, the risk of cyberattacks has surged. These guidelines provide a structured approach to ensuring UAV operations remain secure, resilient, and aligned with global standards.
What’s covered
The guidelines establish a unified cybersecurity baseline for all drone-related activities in the UAE. This includes operational protocols, threat detection strategies, and technical requirements for safeguarding communications, navigation systems, and sensitive data collected by drones.
Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti, Head of UAE Cybersecurity, emphasised the importance of the framework: “These guidelines represent a vital milestone in enhancing the nation’s UAV ecosystem, ensuring that drone operations across government, commercial, and industrial sectors are resilient, secure, and aligned with global best practices.”
With UAVs playing an increasingly strategic role in smart cities and national services, the guidelines aim to pre-empt and neutralise threats that could compromise public safety, infrastructure, or information integrity.
Who’s behind it
The framework was jointly developed by the CSC, Reach Digital, and Shieldworkz – two key players in the UAE’s digital transformation and cyber innovation sectors.
Reach Digital is a subsidiary of Reach Group and focuses on future-forward digital strategies. Its CEO, Malik Melhem, stated: “This collaboration reflects our unwavering commitment to advancing the UAE’s digital and cybersecurity infrastructure. We are proud to contribute to national readiness by aligning with CSC and delivering practical, scalable cybersecurity solutions for the drone sector.”
Shieldworkz, a cybersecurity firm specialising in operational technology (OT), IoT, and drone protection, brought advanced technical know-how to the project, ensuring the framework is rooted in real-world threats and cutting-edge defences.
